• October 22nd: (Villod RMX 12" vinyl A/B) // Beatport EP exclusive (Villod main RMX/Reshaped by Pole mix)

• November 5th: download (album version, Villod RMX, Reshaped by Pole, Gaudi RMX, InstruMENTAL VERSION) // green 7” vinyl: a – album version, b - instruMENTAL)

‘Soulman’ is anatmospheric, bass-heavy slo-mo house groove adorned with Perry’s spiritual proclamations, which comes complete with killer remixes. Villod AKA Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer deliver thirteen minutes of quirky abstract brilliance, utilising a low-fi bossa nova beat, perhaps in reference to Perry’s classic production on the Congos’ ‘Congoman’. As well as the main Villod RMX, there are two other versions available on the 12”, created with that format in mind.

Pole takes the flavour of the original, strips it back and adds extra heaviness, while Gaudi delivers a radical re-working, giving Lee’s vocals completely new context at the centrepiece of an irie, steppers anthem. The Orb themselves provide an ‘instruMENTAL VERSION’, allowing the listener to fully appreciate their subtly masterful sonic paintings.

‘Soulman’ is the second single from acclaimed album ‘The Orb featuring Lee Scratch Perry present THE ORBSERVER in the star house’, which is out now on Cooking Vinyl. Here’s the verdict:
