Ten years after the launch of his inimitable SUB:STANCE party at Berghain, which ended in 2013, Scuba presents three new releases channelling the spirit of the era, due out over the next few weeks on Hotflush.
SUB:STANCE opened a portal for many involved with the UK-centric dubstep movement of the 2000s,immersing them directly at the core of Berlin’s thriving techno scene. During its five year run from 2008-2013,the quarterly event run by Paul Rose (aka Scuba) and Paul Fowler (aka Paul Spymania) brought an impressivelist of artists to Berghain for the first time, opening up the Berlin institution to a new set of aesthetics andcommanding a dialogue between two crucial scenes. SUB:STANCE quickly spread further afield, with aresidency in New York and showcases held around the world, before coming to a considered end with a finalparty at Berghain and Panorama Bar in July 2013, exactly five years after the first edition.
‘A Mutual Antipathy Revisited’ offers a remastered version of Scuba's seminal 2008 debut, with the addition ofa previously unreleased track featuring Amp Fiddler. The package also contains the original 2008 remixes byMarcel Dettmann, Surgeon, Martyn, Substance, Jamie Vex’d, and the first outing of Scuba's SCB alias. Thealbum and remixes marked a formalisation of the links between the UK-centric sound of dubstep and theundisputed capital of techno, Berlin. Release date 19th October.
‘SUB:STANCE in Retrograde’ is a previously unheard collection of tracks produced during the sessions for thefirst two Scuba albums ('A Mutual Antipathy', and 'Triangulation') in 2008 and 2010. Across ten tracks, Scubacultivates the sonic aesthetic established in the UK during the incubative period of dubstep, whilst incorporatingthe fruits of an exploration of textures, drum patterns and acoustics. The familiar dub tropes of slowly decayingechoes and floating pads are offset with industrial synth leads, intense percussion, and cavernous space.Carefully fusing elements from the multi-layered UK scene with the singular aesthetic of Berlin, he provides aspace for disparate elements to cohabit in a way that highlights their respective strengths. Release date 2ndNovember.
