Release and Opening at Sprüth Magers Berlin / Image Movement and after show party at about:blank
Christian Morgenstern was not only a renowned producer of electronic music, but also an inspiration for a young generation of artists who now are the bearers of contemporary techno and other forms of electronica. For the first time ever Morgenstern's entire catalog has been made digitally available via Konsequent records – accompanied by a limited re-mastered series of eight 12” records that include remixes by artists such as Distant Echoes, Alexander Kowalski, Ben Kaczor, Efdemin, or Oscar Mulero. After 12 years, these releases also mark the return of Konsequent. Founded in 1997 by Maral Salmassi, the label was home to some of the earliest releases of Morgenstern, and represented the deep creative and personal relationship the two shared. Evident in his music, he was a person who felt the world very deeply and often struggled with how to cope with this keen understanding. On June 17th, 2003 he decided to take his own life.
This series of releases wants to celebrate both his life and his work.
The cover art for each record is 1/8th of a piece by American artist Nathan Baker.
For the design of the box set containing all eight 12"-records Salmassi commissioned Berlin-based artist Thomas Scheibitz. Scheibitz is a painter and sculptor who was aptly described as an old-fashioned draughtsman with a hyper-modern mind. His work is brilliant, exquisitely made and highly intelligent: "Shapes rhyme, rhythms recur, colours reappear, and the strong lines sweep through objects and images with a suave and celebratory force. Scheibitz's work is extraordinarily various, never once repeating itself, and yet everything appears genetically linked." (Laura Cumming, The Guardian, 2013/6/26)
It is Thomas Scheibitz's strong affinity for music that isn’t stereotypically fitting into any genre, which was key to this collaboration. He will engross his thoughts on this and about his artistic approach in an artists talk with Maral Salmassi.
Scheibitz's beautiful piece, a bespoken wooden coffer, is handmade, bedaubed, and limited and numbered to seven pieces (plus 2 AP). It will be on view and available at Image Movement.
Furthermore, we are happy to announce that from 11pm on we will continue the evening at about:blank partying along superb live– and dj–sets selected by Maral Salmassi.
